President Mohammed Muizzu told supporters on Friday that the government’s work will bring “very sweet” results, urging voters to back Congress candidates in the upcoming local council and women’s development committee elections.
He made the remarks after joining a large cycle tour organised by the People’s National Congress in Malé, held as part of the party’s campaign push ahead of the April 4 vote.
Speaking to participants at the end of the event, the President said he has worked hard to fulfil the promises made to the people, despite what he described as significant economic challenges inherited by his administration. He said the government is now overcoming those difficulties and delivering visible progress.
President Muizzu reiterated his support for the decentralisation system, saying councils must be empowered and included in national development. He stressed that the government cannot and should not operate alone.

“We need the support of the council system to complete the work ahead,” he said, calling on voters to elect candidates who will cooperate with the administration. He added that having aligned councils would accelerate development projects across the islands.
The President described the April 4 vote as an important election that requires unity and responsibility from the public. He said his appeal for votes comes from a place of good faith and a desire to continue delivering results.
The cycle tour began in the Marybrown area and concluded near the PNC office in Henveiru. Vice President Hussain Mohammed Latheef, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, ministers, MPs, party leaders and a large crowd of supporters took part.

President Muizzu met participants at the finish point, where he again urged voters to choose Congress candidates for both council seats and women’s development committees, saying their cooperation would give “great impetus” to ongoing and future development efforts.
He also noted that he does not accept any attempt to sideline councils or strip them of their powers, emphasising that decentralisation must remain a functioning pillar of governance.
The PNC described the cycle tour as part of its preparations for the local council elections, the women’s development committee elections and the planned referendum to hold the presidential and Majlis elections on the same day.
