The government has accelerated the distribution of Ramadan gift packages this year, with officials reporting a smoother and faster process than in previous years. More than 27,000 cases of canned fish have been delivered in Malé alone over the past 10 days, according to distribution figures. Deliveries are underway across all inhabited islands.

Under the new system, each person collecting the Ramadan gift is processed in under five minutes, a significant change from past years when long queues and delays were common. Officials say the improvements stem from logistical adjustments introduced last year, when the administration began distributing Ramadan gifts as part of a new initiative launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The government first shifted to canned‑fish packages in 2025, distributing more than 111,000 cases nationwide. That effort cost roughly MVR 81 million, with discounted pricing negotiated through the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company. Households in the outer islands received the majority of the supply, reflecting the higher transport burden outside the capital.

This year’s distribution has so far proceeded without major disruptions, and officials say public response has been strong. The government plans to complete deliveries to all islands before Ramadan begins.
