Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has extended his gratitude to the residents of Addu City after wrapping up a tour of the southern atoll, following his announcement to contest the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) 2028 presidential primary.

In a post on X, Shahid expressed his deep thanks for the warm welcome, smiles, and support his campaign team received across the islands of Addu.

Speaking on the region’s future, Shahid emphasized that turning Addu’s development goals into reality will require direct consultation with residents, expert input, and decisive action.

“What I will deliver moving forward is action—solving problems directly,” Shahid said, promising a capable, experienced administration that produces tangible results.

The tour comes shortly after Shahid announced his bid for the main opposition party’s presidential ticket during a rally in Hithadhoo. To ensure a fair contest and prevent any conflict of interest, he resigned immediately from his position as MDP President.

Shahid argued during his address that MDP remains the only political platform capable of navigating the nation out of its current economic and social challenges. Pointing to the party’s grassroots as the true drivers of democratic reform, he pledged to work closely with members to recapture the presidency.

Bringing a decades-long political career to the race, Shahid previously served as Majlis Speaker from 2009 to 2014, Foreign Minister under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and President of the 76th UN General Assembly.
