Sheikh Hasina took the oath of office for her fifth term as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Thursday, following her Awami League party’s resounding victory in the general elections. Notably, the elections were boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies.

President Mohammad Shahabuddin officiated the ceremony, administering the oath to the 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina. The event was attended by politicians, foreign diplomats, civil society figures, and senior civil and military officials. Subsequent to the Prime Minister, the newly appointed cabinet members were also sworn in by the president.

Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League secured a notable victory, winning 223 seats in the 300-member Parliament. The major opposition party, BNP, led by ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, boycotted the elections after their demand for a non-party caretaker government overseeing the January 7 polls was rejected. The absence of the main opposition party adds a unique dynamic to Sheikh Hasina’s fifth term in office.
