President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives expressed satisfaction with the productive discussions held with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting on Wednesday. The positive sentiments were reiterated during President Muizzu’s courtesy call to China’s Premier of the State Council, Li Qiang, on Thursday.
The meeting between President Muizzu and Premier Li Qiang took place at the prestigious Great Hall of People in Beijing, China. The primary focus of the discussions centered on fortifying the longstanding bilateral relationship between the Maldives and China while exploring areas of mutual interest.
Key topics on the agenda included enhancing cooperation in e-commerce and supporting upcoming projects under President Muizzu’s administration. Notably, discussions delved into the ambitious Ras Malé development project, airport expansion initiatives, and other pivotal development projects crucial to the Maldivian growth trajectory. The leaders also explored avenues to increase direct flights and foster deeper collaboration in the tourism sector.
Premier Li Qiang extended offers of support to the Maldivian populace across diverse fields, encompassing scholarship opportunities, vocational training, sports education, fisheries and maritime cooperation, ecological initiatives, meteorological technologies, and more.
President Dr. Muizzu, in response, emphasized his commitment to strengthening ties across shared interests and expressed his determination to elevate bilateral relations between the Maldives and China to new heights during his administration.
The ongoing state visit to the People’s Republic of China by President Muizzu and the First Lady, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, is marked by a high-level delegation accompanying the dignitaries. The visit underscores the enduring diplomatic ties between the two nations, which were established in 1972.
