MALE’ — The People’s Majlis General Committee decided on Wednesday to allocate one hour for the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, with Nazim himself given ten minutes to address the chamber before the debate begins and the vote is held. The vote is expected on Thursday.
The motion was moved in committee by PNC MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed and seconded by Dhavafaru MP Mohamed Ali. Abdul Sattar proposed three minutes per speaker for the debate, with Nazim’s ten-minute response coming before the floor opens. Five members voted in favour of the arrangement. One abstained. Seven attended in total.
Ten minutes. That is what the Majlis has decided a Deputy Speaker’s defence is worth before his own party removes him.
What Nazim actually did to lose the confidence of 73 PNC colleagues remains officially unexplained. The resolution cites bias and conduct prejudicial to the interests of the parliament but offers no specific account of what triggered it. No incident. No date. No named act. Just broad language and a majority that was always going to be there.
The PNC holds 76 of 93 seats. The outcome on Thursday is not in doubt. What remains in doubt is whether Nazim will use his ten minutes to go quietly or to say something the party would rather he did not.
