MALE’ — Zakat al-mal collections rose 73 per cent in May to MVR 7.5 million, up from MVR 4.3 million in the same month last year, according to MIRA’s May revenue report.
For the first five months of the year, total zakat collections reached MVR 58 million, 14 per cent higher than the MVR 50 million collected over the same period in 2025.
The Maldives Zakat House set the nisab threshold for cash zakat at MVR 21,836.50 on 21 April, calculated at MVR 36.70 per gram of silver at 595 grams. The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a person must hold for a full lunar year before zakat becomes obligatory. It shifts in line with silver and gold prices, which are published by the Maldives Monetary Authority.
Zakat is collected by MIRA and can be paid online through the authority’s website, which also allows individuals to calculate how much they owe.
Zakat House distributed MVR 13.1 million to 2,384 registered recipients from the poor and needy register up to the first day of Dhul Hijja this year, at MVR 5,500 per person. That per-person amount is the highest distributed to date.
