MALE’, — The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has formally requested that the Local Government Authority (LGA) publicly live-stream all future board meetings to enhance institutional transparency.
The proposal was submitted on Thursday by the MDP’s Decentralisation Committee during an official meeting with LGA board members aimed at raising key administrative concerns.
Following the discussions, the opposition committee published a summary of the grievances presented to the oversight body, highlighting several contentious decisions regarding local governance:
- Land Allocation Disparity: The committee expressed concern over a decision allocating land belonging to the Faafu Atoll Council exclusively to the island of Nilandhoo, requesting clarification on the rationale behind the move.
- Dissolution of Atoll Councils: The delegation voiced strong opposition to the administration’s policy regarding the dissolution of atoll councils.
- Removal of Local Officials: The MDP questioned the legal justification surrounding the LGA’s determination that the President of the Vaavu Thinadhoo Council had forfeited his position.
- Island Depopulation: Opposition representatives expressed concern over the depopulation and resettlement measures affecting Haa Dhaalu Hirimaradhoo whilst residents were actively residing on the island.
According to statements released by the MDP, members of the LGA governing board attended the session to receive the committee’s submissions.
The LGA has yet to publicly issue an official response regarding the grievances raised or clarify whether it intends to adopt the recommendation to broadcast board meetings live.
