American Held in Male’ After Attempting to Enter Maldives with Arms

A 36-year-old American citizen is in police custody after security officers caught him trying to enter the Maldives with arms and ammunition at Velana International Airport.

The suspect, identified as Coboll Britain Tyler, was stopped by security screeners after a loaded magazine containing live rounds was picked up inside his luggage during entry checks. Security personnel immediately intercepted him at the port.

Tyler was brought before the Criminal Court on Tuesday under a court order, where the judge remanded him into police custody for 10 days to give officers time to investigate. Importing firearms, live ammunition, or explosives without specific prior authorization from the government is strictly illegal under Maldivian law.

Police are conducting a full investigation alongside relevant state agencies and are expected to formally notify the U.S. Embassy. The quick stop by port authorities drew praise from the public, with locals commending security forces for staying alert and keeping the country’s main entryway safe.

Unrelated Security Incident in India

The arrest in Male’ comes shortly after another security issue involving an American in the region. On July 11, Indian border guards arrested 36-year-old California resident Jordan Brown near the Sonauli border point in Uttar Pradesh as he tried to cross into Nepal without a valid passport or visa.

Brown, who claimed he served in the U.S. Navy and Special Forces, told officers he lost his travel documents in Thailand before moving through Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Intelligence agencies noted key inconsistencies in his story, though officials confirmed he had no weapons or live rounds on him and was charged under the Foreigners Act for illegal entry rather than espionage or terror ties.

In a separate incident in May, 34-year-old U.S. national was booked under the Arms Act in Bengaluru after hotel staff found a magazine with seven live bullets left behind in his room. Indian authorities are still investigating how those rounds cleared airport security checks.
