The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology Co. Ltd. to install a major solar power and battery storage system.

Under the framework agreement, the parties plan to establish a 15-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system alongside a 15-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Maldives.

Deputy Minister Hussain Akeel Naseer signed the agreement on behalf of the Environment Ministry, while Acting Vice President Dongting He represented Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology.

The ministry stated that the initiative marks a significant step towards reinforcing the national electricity grid and enhancing renewable energy storage capacity across the country.

The project is expected to provide substantial momentum toward achieving the government’s target of sourcing 33 per cent of the nation’s energy generation from renewable energy by 2028.
