Opposition figures have officially launched a national campaign dubbed “Maldivian Land for Maldivians” to protest the government’s decision to lease land in the Rasmalé development project to UAE-based Eagle Hills on a 99-year contract.
The initiative was unveiled on Monday during a joint press conference held by representatives of the opposition.
Speaking at the launch, former Home Minister and Adhaalath Party Leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla said the movement aims to unite public concerns from across the nation into a single cause. Imran stated that the campaign will continue relentlessly until the administration revokes its deal with Eagle Hills.
Levelling heavy criticism at President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, Imran alleged that handing over a massive portion of land reclaimed using more than USD 500 million from state funds to a foreign entity for nearly a century is a grave injustice against the public. He further claimed the agreement creates a dangerous opening for Zionist influence in the country.
Imran stressed that Maldivian land and lagoons should only be leased to foreign investors through transparent procedures that involve public participation. Reminding reporters that Maldivians have historically stepped up whenever national sovereignty was threatened, he called on political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to unite behind the campaign.
