Sheikh Mohamed Haleem, President of Ilmveringe Gulhun, alongside prominent religious scholars Dr Ali Zahir and Sheikh Hassan Moosa Fikuree, have resigned from the prominent association of Islamic scholars.
In a statement to local broadcaster MMTV, Sheikh Haleem confirmed his departure as President of Ilmveringe Gulhun. However, he did not state a clear reason for stepping down.
Two of the country’s Islamic scholars—Islamic University Vice Chancellor Dr Ali Zahir and Sheikh Hassan Moosa Fikuree—have also resigned from the association.
Both scholars quit Ilmveringe Gulhun due to a loss of trust and confidence in the organization.
The high-profile resignations mark a major blow to the association, which brings together a large number of local religious scholars—most of whom studied in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan—who came to prominence after they campaigned against the yoga day activities and MDP candidate, then-President Solih, during the last presidential election. Since then, they have become a religious lobby, and much like the rift that happened during the presidential election, the same dynamic is repeating itself over the Rasmale’ deal.
