Ahmed Saleem, the first president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and a recipient of the Foreign Service’s highest honour, has presented his new book, Memoirs of the HRCM, to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The book was handed over during a meeting at the President’s Office on Sunday morning.
In the memoir, Saleem recounts the establishment of the Human Rights Commission and reflects on the five years he served as its founding president. The book documents the institution’s formative period and the challenges of building a rights‑monitoring body in a rapidly changing political environment.
The work also chronicles key events during the Maldives’ historic transition toward a multi‑party democratic system — a period marked by constitutional reform, political upheaval and the creation of new independent institutions.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives was first established by presidential decree in 2003, and Saleem was appointed its inaugural president. He later became the first chairman of the commission after it was reconstituted under the 2008 Constitution, which granted it full statutory independence.
