Government to Submit Legislative Amendments Following April Referendum, Says President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will propose a series of legislative amendments based on the outcome of the April Public Referendum. He made the remarks at a press briefing held today at the President’s Office.

The President said that if the public decides to hold parliamentary and presidential elections concurrently in 2028, the Government will move forward with the required legal changes as part of a wider reform package. This may include adjustments to the current parliamentary term.

He noted that the administration is also considering changes to the composition of the People’s Majlis to reflect population growth. Among the ideas under review is the introduction of a set proportion of seats for women and individuals under the age of 30.

The President said a study is underway on adopting a preferential voting system that would allow presidential elections to be decided in a single round. A separate review is examining the provision that sets 11 November as the start date of the presidential term.

He added that the Government will also propose amendments aimed at strengthening the autonomy of independent institutions and safeguarding judicial independence.

President Muizzu confirmed that work on establishing the Citizen Complaints Bureau is progressing rapidly, with the launch scheduled for July.
