The national mental health helpline, “1677,” has recorded more than 23,000 calls since its launch in 2024, according to the Ministry of Health, Family and Social Services.

The figures were announced during the closing ceremony of the Community Color Run held in K. Kaashidhoo to mark World Mental Health Day. Officials noted that the administration is placing a strong emphasis on expanding mental health care systems, highlighting the helpline as a vital resource for citizens seeking guidance and support.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Geela Ali emphasized the importance of fostering a compassionate, safe environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, noting that building a supportive community is both a personal and national responsibility.

Addressing this year’s theme, “Shared Experiences: Real Voices, Real Change,” the Minister stressed that mental wellbeing must extend beyond policy documents on paper. She stated that meaningful help cannot be delivered without actively listening to those navigating isolation and distress.

Key Figures on Mental Health

  • Helpline Utilization: Since the launch of the national mental health helpline in February 2024 through September 2026, the service has logged 23,679 calls.

  • National Treatment Numbers: Between 2023 and 2025, over 70,000 individuals sought treatment for mental health conditions across the Maldives, with more than 45,000 of those patients consulting doctors in the Greater Malé area.

  • Depression Indicators: Data from the 2020-2021 WHO STEPwise approach survey indicates that roughly 4 in 10 adults across youth and middle-aged demographics exhibit mild to notable signs of depression.

The Ministry underscored that schools, families, and workplaces all play an essential role in reducing social stigma, encouraging open dialogue, and ensuring individuals can seek help safely and without judgment.
