MALE’, Maldives — A man has been remanded in custody for 10 days after he allegedly posted a death threat against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Facebook, the police said Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Maseeh Moosa of Thimarafushi Island, was arrested earlier in the day. His mobile phone was seized as part of the investigation, according to a police statement. A court extended his remand on Thursday.

Mr. Muizzu received the threat after stating that he favoured imposing the death penalty for drug trafficking, in line with policies in some other countries. In a post on X, he said the Maldives should consider similar measures.

Mr. Moosa allegedly responded to news coverage of those remarks by writing that the president “should be killed first,” the police said.
