MALE’ — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today appointed Mohamed Shakeel as a member of the Elections Commission of the Maldives.
The appointment ceremony was held this morning at the President’s Office, where Shakeel took the oath of office, administered by Supreme Court Justice Uz. Mohamed Saleem. Following the swearing-in, President Muizzu formally presented the letter of appointment to Mr. Shakeel.
The appointment was made under the authority granted to the President by Article 168 (b) of the Constitution and Section 4 (a) of the Elections Commission Act (Act No. 8/2008).
Shakeel brings significant experience to the commission, having previously served in key roles within the institution. He held the position of Director General from 2013 to 2014 and served as a member of the commission from December 2014 to May 2018. His appointment follows the vacancy created by the resignation of the commission’s former president, Mohamed Zahid.
Prior to this new appointment, Mr. Shakeel served as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, a position from which he has now resigned following parliamentary approval for his new role on 23 June.
Shakeel’s career includes a diverse range of political experience, including serving as the Secretary-General of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in 2019. He has also been a prominent figure in political advocacy, noted for his active support of former President Abdulla Yameen and his leadership in opposition-led demonstrations in recent years.
