Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has received more than half the votes in a Sun Online poll asking which MDP figure would make the strongest presidential candidate in 2028, with 58.3 percent of respondents backing him.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih came second with 16 percent, followed by former President Mohamed Nasheed at 13.9 percent. Dr Ahmed Shamheed received 6.7 percent, Fayyaz Ismail 4.9 percent and former Vice President Faisal Naseem 0.3 percent.

Shahid served as president of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly during the Solih administration and is currently campaigning for the MDP’s presidential primary, scheduled for next year. Fayyaz has also formally declared his candidacy for the primary. Faisal Naseem and Dr Shamheed are also working to build support ahead of the contest.

The total number of votes cast in the poll has not been disclosed by Sun Online. Online polls are self-selecting and do not represent a scientific sample, but the result offers a snapshot of sentiment among the outlet’s readership.
