The Government of Maldives has issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the one-China principle in the aftermath of the elections in the Taiwan region.
In a series of official statements released on January 14, 2024, the Maldivian government emphasized its unwavering support for the One-China policy, which it considers as the cornerstone of its relations with China. The statement cited the Joint Communique issued during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s State Visit to China, where both nations underscored the belief that “there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.”
Furthermore, the Maldives expressed its firm opposition to any statement or action that undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The government explicitly denounced all “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and affirmed that it would not develop any form of official relations with Taiwan.
The statement also touched upon the Maldives’ stance against external interference in China’s internal affairs under any pretext. The Maldives expressed its support for all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification, aligning itself with China’s policies in this regard.
The reaffirmation of the one-China principle by the Maldivian government underscores the diplomatic and strategic ties between the Maldives and China, emphasizing the importance of adhering to a unified stance on Taiwan-related issues.
