KUNMING, China — Hon. Ahmed Nazim, MP and Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis arrived in Kunming today for a series of significant events aimed at bolstering regional cooperation between China and South Asia.

Hon. Ahmed Nazim, leading a delegation of Maldivian parliamentarians, is set to participate in the 8th China-South Asia Expo, which begins tomorrow, as well as the 5th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum on July 24. This visit marks a continuation of the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the Maldives and China, strengthened by the state visit of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in January.

Upon his arrival, Nazim was warmly welcomed by Chinese officials, including H.E. Ren Junhao, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of Yunnan Province, and Mme. Han Mei, Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of Yunnan Province.

In a day filled with high-level meetings, Nazim discussed potential areas of collaboration with Yunnan province leaders, further cementing the relationship between the two regions.

Hon. Ahmed Nazim is scheduled to deliver speeches at both the opening ceremony of the 8th China-South Asia Expo and the 5th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum. The Expo, themed “Solidarity and Coordination for Common Development,” will feature tours of various pavilions, including those representing South Asian countries, and visits to prominent local companies such as Yunnan Tengyun Information Co. Ltd. and Yunnan Nongken Coffee Co. Ltd.

The China-South Asia Cooperation Forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, will convene over 200 high-level officials and representatives from China and South Asia. This year’s theme, “Building Consensus for Regional Development,” aims to promote exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation among participating nations. The forum has been held annually in Kunming since 2018, facilitating in-depth discussions on regional cooperation and development.

Other members of the Maldivian delegation include MPs Hussain Ziad, Abdullah Rifau, Ibrahim Didi, and Hassan Mufeed. They are expected to engage in various activities, including visits to key local enterprises and natural landmarks like the Baofeng Wetland.

Nazim’s active participation in these events highlights the Maldives’ dedication to strengthening regional ties and exploring new avenues for collaborative development with China. His involvement underscores the strategic importance of the Maldives in regional diplomacy and economic cooperation, reflecting a commitment to fostering a prosperous and cooperative South Asia.
