Maldives and Saudi Arabia have officially entered a “completely new chapter” in their bilateral relations, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last night, reassuring Saudi investors that the Maldives is fully open and ready to provide a favorable business environment.
Speaking as the chief guest at a gala held at Kurumba Maldives to mark the 96th Saudi National Day, President Muizzu highlighted the deep economic and strategic ties binding the two nations. The event, hosted by the Saudi Embassy in Malé, was attended by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed alongside senior government officials.
Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu assured Saudi investors and business leaders that his administration would streamline opportunities across key growth sectors.
“The Maldives is fully ready to welcome Saudi investors. We will ensure the most enabling environment for investment here,” President Muizzu said, noting potential ventures spanning tourism, infrastructure, housing, healthcare, fisheries, renewable energy, and transport.
Highlighting recent defense and diplomatic achievements, the President noted the signing of the ‘Charter of the Multinational Maritime Defense’ as a key milestone between both countries. He further confirmed Maldivian participation in Expo 2030 Riyadh, describing it as a crucial platform to boost tourism, trade, and cultural ties.
Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives, Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani, reiterated Riyadh’s commitment to Maldivian development. The ambassador revealed that the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has funneled USD 488 million (approx. MVR 7.5 billion) into local development projects since 1978, funding vital housing, health, fisheries, transport, and infrastructure works.
Under Saudi Vision 2030, Ambassador Al-Qahtani expressed keen interest in expanding Saudi investments across the Maldives, particularly in tourism and technology.
The official ceremony featured a special video presentation titled “A Partnership for the Future” and a ceremonial cake cutting. During his address, President Muizzu also extended formal National Day greetings to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the Saudi public.
