Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Customs Service, in collaboration with experts from the European Union’s Partnership for Peace (EU P2P) Programme, has kicked off a two-day training session focused on the legal aspects of Strategic Trade Management of Dual-Use Items. The event, which began today, aims to enhance the Maldives’ capacity to regulate goods, software, and technologies that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

The training, held in Malé, brings together 20 participants from the Customs Service and other key stakeholder agencies. Dual-use items, as defined by the European Commission, include materials that contribute to the EU’s Global Strategy and its efforts to counter the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). The session is part of a broader initiative to strengthen export controls worldwide, aligning with the EU P2P Programme’s demand-driven approach, which leverages approximately 200 subject matter experts globally.

This training comes at a time when the Maldives is enhancing its trade and border security frameworks. Recent developments, including proposed intellectual property legislation that would empower the Customs Service with border control measures for IP rights protection, highlight the nation’s growing focus on regulatory excellence.

The EU P2P Programme, funded through the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument – Global Europe, has a longstanding presence in the region, further supporting such initiatives.
