Malé — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a sweeping housing initiative on Tuesday, pledging to allocate 15,000 plots of land and begin construction on 7,000 housing units in an effort to resolve the capital’s long-standing housing crisis.

Speaking at the 57th Republic Day ceremony held at the Social Centre, President Muizzu said applications for the plots will open in the coming days. The program will prioritize Malé residents over the age of 18 who do not currently own housing, with a focus on family-based applicants. Plots will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to those deemed most in need.

“The 15,000 plots will be given to residents of Malé, long-time residents, those on the Malé registry, and those who need land,” Muizzu said.

The president noted that land reclamation efforts are progressing rapidly, with dredging for the required plots expected to be completed within five months. Additional dredgers will be deployed next month to accelerate work at the Ras Malé site.

“We will announce the application details soon,” President Muizzu said. “As dredging continues, we are preparing to open access to the land.”

The housing component of the initiative includes 7,000 units, with construction slated to begin next year. Of these, 3,000 units will be contracted before the end of 2025, while 4,000 units are being developed under India’s Line of Credit.

“Those works are also underway,” President Muizzu said, reaffirming that housing remains the administration’s top priority. “This is a permanent solution to the city’s biggest problem.”
