The main street of the capital filled this afternoon as the People’s Great March moved through the city, drawing thousands of PNC supporters on the eve of Saturday’s triple vote. President Dr Mohammed Muizzu and First Lady Sajida Mohammed led the procession, joined by ministers, senior government officials, MPs and Congress members.
The march marked the final push in a two‑month campaign in which the Congress Party has fielded the largest number of candidates for both the local council elections and the women’s development committee elections. Party leaders used the turnout to urge voters to back their candidates and to support a “yes” vote in tomorrow’s referendum on holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.

Speakers described Saturday as a decisive moment, pointing to what they called three crucial votes: the council elections, the WDC elections and the referendum. The proposal to synchronise national elections has been promoted by the administration as a step toward political stability and reduced costs.
Crowds lined the route as the march advanced, many carrying party flags and banners calling for unity behind the Congress slate. Senior figures highlighted the seats already secured uncontested, presenting them as evidence of strong momentum heading into polling day.
With campaigning closing at 6pm, attention now turns to Saturday’s vote, which officials expect will draw a strong turnout across the islands. The PNC has been campaigning tirelessly and vigorously throughout the past two months, framing tomorrow’s vote as a test of public confidence in the government’s direction.
