A senior Home Ministry official has called for an investigation into former President Mohamed Nasheed’s conduct during clashes between police and supporters of the three former presidents following their joint meeting last week.
Minister of State for Homeland Security Ahmed Siddeeq said on social media that Nasheed disobeyed a police order and broke through a barricade in a police-closed area after the meeting concluded. He said the act was illegal and should be treated as a serious case.
Siddeeq also turned his attention to the Special Protection Group officers assigned to Nasheed’s security detail, saying they should be investigated for their involvement in the incident. He said SPG officers are assigned to protect former presidents, not to assist them in committing criminal offences, and called for the security framework governing former presidents to be strengthened to prevent such situations from recurring.
The clashes broke out when police blocked the former presidents from leaving the venue after the meeting. Supporters who had gathered outside confronted police, leading to a standoff. Several people were arrested that night on charges of obstructing police duties and disobeying orders.
Siddeeq’s remarks add a new dimension to the government’s response to the three-president alliance. Earlier this week, PNC MP Mohamed Ismail called for a review of the allowances and protections given to former presidents. Now a Home Ministry official is calling for a criminal investigation into one of them.
