President Congratulates New British Prime Minister, Citing Strong Bilateral Ties

MALE, — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has sent a letter of congratulations to Andy Burnham following his appointment as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, reaffirming the historical partnership between Male and London.

In his message to the newly appointed Labour leader, Muizzu expressed readiness to work closely with Downing Street to deepen bilateral cooperation, framing the relationship as a cornerstone of the archipelago’s socio-economic development.

“The close relationship between our two nations is built upon a shared commitment to democratic principles and the protection of human rights,” Muizzu said in a statement released by his office.

Burnham, 56, assumed office following a high-profile political tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester, where his regional governance initiatives earned him significant national prominence.

According to the President’s Office, Muizzu expressed optimism regarding a future bilateral meeting with Burnham to explore expanded cooperation in trade, climate action, and regional diplomacy. The United Kingdom remains one of the Maldives’ primary European markets for luxury tourism and seafood exports.
