Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim hit out at government officials during a council meeting on Monday, pointing to what he called “heartbreaking” spending under the previous city council led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

According to Azim, council records show over MVR 60 million was given by the former MDP administration to set up facilities and resources for the municipality—only for the funds to be written off as spent on buying plants.

“If plants were bought, all Malé has to show for it are those date palms standing on one side of the city. Other than that, nothing of real value was bought here,” Azim told council members. “Is MVR 60 million really the price tag for a few date palms?”

Azim argued that the public needs to hold the former mayor accountable before taking criticism from officials now serving in the current administration.

“When these people go around talking all over the place, if anyone actually saw what they did to this place, it would break your heart,” he said.

The Mayor added that because the current council is digging into past irregularities and land dealings, the government is now attempting to seize back council-managed land in retaliation.
