Former President and main opposition MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has declared that every single policy introduced by the government to generate US dollars has completely failed.
Nasheed made the remarks in a post on X on Monday, warning that the rate of the US dollar continues to climb higher across the country. He noted that even with Maldivian Rufiyaa in their bank accounts, citizens are unable to exchange their local money for dollars, causing severe financial harm to everyday parents and local business owners.
“Families living abroad to send their children to school and many local business owners have been put through extreme hardship,” Nasheed said.
The former president pointed out that the government only avoided defaulting on its foreign debt obligations this month because India extended the repayment deadline for a currency swap facility. He also took a jab at President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s upcoming official visit to Pakistan tomorrow, questioning the logic of the trip given the country’s pressing economic position.
Nasheed’s comments came as the civil movement, associated with Nasheed’s proposed bodu badhalu, “Edhey Raajje” called on the government to clearly define its official role and curb the misuse of state resources under the guise of public interest. The movement stated that the primary duty of any administration should be formulating long-term national development policies, ensuring strict compliance with those plans, and keeping the Maldives competitive on the global stage.
