Defending his father’s integrity amidst mounting controversy, Yameen Shahid declared that his family stands firmly behind Abdulla Shahid, describing the allegations against the prominent Maldivian politician as a politically motivated attempt to destroy his reputation.

“I know my father’s character, his values and the kind of man he is. I know he would never do what he’s being accused of, and I stand by him completely,” Yameen Shahid said in a statement posted on X . “Seeing him arrested today has been heartbreaking, and the way this has unfolded raises serious questions. He deserves fairness, due process and every opportunity to defend himself. Our family stands firmly by him. We will not waver.”

The statement follows a rapid series of events on Monday evening. According to reports, Shahid was initially questioned by the police earlier in the day. Upon returning to his apartment in Hulhumale, the 64-year-old former President of the United Nations General Assembly issued a public statement on social media rejecting the accusations.

“The stories being circulated politically to assassinate my character are baseless lies,” Shahid wrote in Dhivehi. “I request everyone to refrain from spreading such unsubstantiated rumors.”

Shortly after the post was published, law enforcement officers taken custody of Shahid at his Hulhumale apartment at 21:59 local time under a court warrant.

In a subsequent statement released on X, the Maldives Police Service confirmed the arrest, stating that Shahid is under investigation regarding allegations of sexual assault involving a minor under 18 years of age. Police added that additional investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
