President Dr Mohamed Muizzu marked the eight-year anniversary of the Sinamalé Bridge on Sunday, hailing the landmark infrastructure project as an enduring symbol of close friendship between the Maldives and China.
In a statement posted on X, President Muizzu said the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge represents far more than concrete and engineering. He described it as a monument built on trust, unity, and shared ambition between the two nations.
The President noted that bilateral ties have deepened under Chinese President Xi Jinping, pointing out that the ongoing partnership will unlock massive future opportunities for citizens of both countries. He further reaffirmed Male’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic bonds with Beijing.
Marking the anniversary, President Muizzu personally visited the bridge site on Sunday to inspect the area. He was received on arrival by Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xinhua.
During the walkthrough, the President toured an exhibit set up at the adjacent park, viewing historical photographs that captured the heavy construction phases and the grand inauguration ceremony eight years ago.
The 1.38-kilometer bridge officially opened to public traffic on 30 August 2018. At the time of its construction, President Muizzu served as the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.
Spanning 20.3 meters in width, the structure features four dedicated lanes for vehicles. The Sinamalé Bridge connects Malé, Velana International Airport on Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé by land.
