Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan personally welcomed around 2,000 new students at Garden City University’s Old Madras Road campus in Bengaluru on 19 August, handing out certificates to the top 100 performers of the incoming batch.

Attending the university’s Fresher’s Day 2026 as Chief Guest, Dr Waheed urged the 2026–2027 intake to focus on their studies, build strong values, and take on leadership roles during their years on campus. The event ended with remarks from GCU Chancellor Dr Joseph V G, who thanked the former president for taking the time to meet the new intake.

The campus visit was part of a broader trip to Karnataka. On 15 August, Dr Waheed joined students and faculty at GCU’s Knowledge Park campus in Hoskote to mark India’s 80th Independence Day upon the invitation of Chancellor Dr Joseph V G and the senior management of the university.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Waheed pointed to the long-standing relationship between the two nations.

“For the Maldives, India is not simply a close neighbour,” Dr Waheed said during his address. “India is a trusted friend, a valued partner, and a country with which we share deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties.”

He added that relations between both countries remain backed by mutual respect and common goals across education, security, and development.

GCU officials noted that hosting the former head of state helped highlight the university’s efforts to build closer links across the region and give students direct exposure to international leaders.
