The government has signed an agreement with Malaysia’s Altus Oil & Gas Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. to set up 30-tonne ice plants across 11 islands to support local fishermen.
State Minister Mohamed Muththalib signed the contract on behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources during a special ceremony held at Maagiri Hotel on Monday. Directors Vijay K. Pillai and Mohamed Taufik Binotman represented Altus Oil & Gas Malaysia.
Under the project, 30-tonne capacity tube ice plants will be built in HA. Dhidhdhoo, Kulhudhuffushi City, Sh. Komandoo, K. Gaafaru, AA. Rasdhoo, M. Mulah, Dh. Hulhudheli, GA. Nilandhoo, GA. Vilingili, GA. Maamendhoo, and GDh. Rathafandhoo.
The ministry said the Malaysian contractor will oversee the full design, technical coordination, and supply of tube ice equipment tailored for island operations. The facilities will feature specialized saltwater cooling systems designed specifically to withstand the Maldivian marine environment.
In addition to supplying equipment, Altus Oil & Gas Malaysia will handle construction, installation, testing, and commissioning, along with logistical management, project documentation, and handover support.
The project marks a major push by the government to expand storage infrastructure and tackle longstanding ice shortages faced by fishermen across the country.
