India and the Maldives are working to set up a Maldives–India Business Council, a new platform aimed at expanding trade, investment and private sector cooperation between the two countries. The proposal was discussed at today’s session of the Maldives–India Business Engagement Series held at the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, organised in partnership with the High Commission of India in Malé and Invest Maldives.

The initiative comes as the Maldives and India mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.

The Ministry said the series aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to deepen economic cooperation with key partners and create new opportunities for Maldivian businesses. The session brought together senior officials from the Ministry, Invest Maldives and the High Commission of India, along with representatives from major companies in both countries.

According to the Ministry, discussions focused on strengthening trade and investment ties, identifying areas for meaningful partnerships and building a more results oriented economic relationship. Officials said the decision to establish a formal Maldives–India Business Council will help institutionalise dialogue and ensure sustained engagement between the private sectors of both countries.

The High Commission of India said the initiative reflects the long standing economic links between the Maldives and India and the shared interest in expanding commercial activity. India remains one of the Maldives’ largest trading partners, and officials noted that the new platform is expected to support further diversification of trade and investment.

The Ministry said future sessions will examine sector specific opportunities and policy frameworks that can support business expansion and encourage private sector participation.
