MALE’ — Newly elected MDP chairperson Mohamed Nasheed spent Monday morning at the party office meeting a string of figures, including the man he defeated in Friday’s election, Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
In a brief video posted to social media by Nasheed’s aide Shamoon Jaleel, Nasheed was seen encouraging Meekail and praising his campaign. “Very nicely done,” Nasheed told him in English.
The meeting with Meekail came after Nasheed first sat down with former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, who led the chairpersonship campaign. Nasheed also met the MDP mayors of four cities, including Male’ City Mayor Adam Aazim, and joined Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar online. He later met MDP president and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.
Nasheed did not meet former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday, as Solih is currently away from Male’. The two are expected to meet once Solih returns to the capital.
Nasheed also convened with the party’s legal committee to receive an update on legal action being pursued on behalf of employees at state-owned companies who were reportedly dismissed or suspended over their participation in the chairpersonship campaign.
The MDP released provisional results on Sunday. Nasheed won with just over 21,000 votes, or 68 per cent of ballots cast. Meekail received around 9,400 votes, or 30 per cent. A total of 31,129 members voted out of approximately 49,000 on the party’s rolls.
Nasheed will formally assume the chairpersonship once official results are announced.
