MALÉ — India has extended warm wishes to the Maldives as the country celebrates its 61st Independence Day, highlighting regional diplomatic ties and shared maritime interests in the Indian Ocean.
In a official diplomatic message addressed to Foreign Minister Dr Iruthisham Adam, New Delhi conveyed greetings to the government and people of the Maldives.
The message was underscored by hashtags referencing India’s key regional diplomatic frameworks, #NeighbourhoodFirst and #VisionMAHASAGAR—signalling New Delhi’s continued focus on prioritizing relations with its immediate oceanic neighbours and maintaining maritime security and economic cooperation across the region.
The diplomatic note coincides with national celebrations across the archipelago. Earlier on Sunday morning, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended a ceremonial flag-hoisting event at Republic Square in Malé to mark the occasion.
The Maldives gained full independence on 26 July 1965, ending 77 years as a British protectorate. The anniversary is being observed with a series of public events, military parades, and official ceremonies throughout the country.
