President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government’s approach to labour, skills, and worker protection is designed to be comprehensive and fair for both Maldivians and expatriates. He made the remarks in his address marking International Workers’ Day, framing labour policy as central to national development and long‑term sovereignty.

In his message, the President said the Government is investing heavily in skills training for young people. He noted that the country’s first vocational high school is now operational, and that new programmes are underway to train workers in fields essential to national progress. Grants and concessional loans have been expanded to support Maldivians seeking to build technical skills. He added that partnerships with major e‑commerce platforms are beginning to show results, helping Maldivian products reach international markets.

The President said the Government has taken firm steps to regulate expatriate employment. Jobs and trades reserved for Maldivians are being identified and enforced, he said, describing the measures as unprecedented in scope.

He also highlighted efforts to widen opportunities for persons with disabilities. In line with his pledge, those who wish to continue working beyond the age of 65 now have that option. He said this administration has met with workers more extensively than any before it, and that long‑standing issues raised by workers across different sectors are now being addressed.

Reflecting on the country’s history, the President said Maldivian civilisation was built on industry and skill. He said ensuring Maldivians remain productive in a globalising world is essential to safeguarding independence and economic strength.

The President also posted greetings on his official X account, saying every worker who contributes to their family or the nation is honourable and valued. He said the country’s progress rests on the dedication of its workforce and expressed his gratitude.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also posted on X, extending her respect to workers across all sectors. She said their sacrifices are recognised and their spirit will continue to be celebrated.

The President ended his address by calling on citizens to support the Government’s efforts to expand employment opportunities. He urged every able Maldivian to step forward and take part in building the country’s future.
