MALE’ — Adam Naseer Ibrahim resigned as Special Advisor to the President on Dhivehi Language and Nationality on Monday, less than a day after being appointed to the role. No reason was given.
The Chief Government Spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, had confirmed in the morning that Adam Naseer had started work in the advisory position. By late afternoon, Shareef posted on X that he had resigned.
The appointment was part of a broader effort by the government to find roles for former cabinet ministers who stepped down in mid-April, when ten ministers resigned at President Muizzu’s request following the local council election results. Adam Naseer was among them. His ministry, which oversaw Dhivehi language and culture, was dissolved in the reshuffle.
Several other ministers from that group have since been placed in senior positions. Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the former Health Minister, is now Principal Secretary to the President on Policy and Manifesto. Adam Shareef Umar, the former Cities Minister, has been named ambassador to Qatar. Thoriq Ibrahim, the former Tourism and Environment Minister, is headed to the UAE as ambassador.
Adam Naseer’s case is different. He was appointed, started work, and was gone within a day.
Before entering cabinet in November 2023, he spent nearly three decades as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives and was regarded as one of the country’s more prominent academics in Dhivehi language and culture.
The President’s Office has not said whether the advisory role will be filled by someone else.
