NEW YORK — In a meeting during the United Nations General Assembly, President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu reaffirmed Maldives’ steadfast support for Palestine, as President Mahmoud Abbas called for urgent international intervention to curb Israeli aggression.
The two leaders met while attending the 79th UNGA session, where Abbas emphasized the need for global assistance to halt the ongoing violence in Palestine. Muizzu assured him of the Maldives’ enduring solidarity with the Palestinian cause, underscoring the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
“Maldives will always stand by Palestine,” President Muizzu said after the meeting. “There is no question where we stand on this issue. The Maldivian people have long supported an independent Palestinian state.”
Since assuming office, Muizzu has been vocal in condemning Israeli actions, echoing calls for justice and protection for Palestinians. His government has continued this tradition, with state-run media organizing a nationwide telethon in July that raised more than MVR 19 million. The funds were recently delivered to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), reflecting the Maldives’ tangible support for Palestinian refugees.
Muizzu’s message was clear: Maldives will continue to raise its voice in defense of Palestine, both in the international arena and at home.
