MALE’ — State Electric Company (STELCO) has decided to build a 70-megawatt power plant in Hulhumalé to address the growing energy demands of the Greater Malé region.
Speaking to state media PSM, STELCO Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar confirmed that physical work on the initiative will commence this coming September.
The new facility will be constructed on land adjacent to STELCO’s existing power station in Hulhumalé Phase One, forming a key component of the company’s Fifth Power Project.
Dr Azwar noted that with the population in the Malé area expanding annually and electricity consumption surging rapidly, STELCO has also decided to construct a medium-speed power plant in Hulhumalé Phase Two as a long-term solution.
Separately, to tackle regional power constraints, the government had previously planned to launch the Sixth Power Project with a 100-megawatt initiative in Hulhumalé. However, the government has since revised the scope by adding an extra 100 megawatts—bringing the total capacity to 200 megawatts—and relocated the project to Gulhifalhu.
