MALE’, Maldives —In a forceful public statement posted to social media, Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, the President of the Maldives, condemned what he described as a “genocidal assault” by Israel in Gaza, accusing it of targeting innocent civilians and calling for immediate international intervention.

“Strongly and unequivocally condemn the continued targeting of innocent civilians by Israel in Gaza, as the genocidal assault by Israel intensifies,” President Muizzu wrote in a post on X. He urged the international community to “take decisive and immediate action to halt the escalation of violence” and reiterated his demand for the protection of civilian lives under international law, stressing the need to hold Israel accountable.

President Muizzu’s statement is not a departure, but rather a continuation of the Maldives’ firm and vocal support for the Palestinian cause — a stance deeply embedded in the country’s diplomatic posture. Under his administration, Malé has repeatedly used international platforms to voice its condemnation of Israeli genocidal actions and advocate for Palestinian rights.

In December 2023, President Muizzu addressed the United Nations General Assembly, where he declared that the “rights of the Palestinian people must be protected with the same urgency and conviction as any other oppressed population.” His government has also supported calls for investigations into alleged war crimes committed in Gaza and backed UN resolutions aimed at de-escalating the conflict.

This consistent commitment reflects both domestic sentiment in the Maldives, where public solidarity with Palestinians is widespread, and the President’s effort to position the country as a moral voice on global human rights issues. Since taking office, President Muizzu has emphasized aligning Maldives’ foreign policy with “Islamic values and international justice” — language that resonates with many in the Maldives.

By issuing his latest statement, President Muizzu reinforces his administration’s commitment to advocacy on the Palestinian issue, even as major powers remain divided over how to respond to the deepening crisis in Gaza.
