Dharavandhoo Airport in Baa Atoll has entered a new phase of development after Island Aviation Services Limited took over operations and announced a major terminal expansion aimed at transforming the passenger experience in one of the country’s busiest regional gateways.

The handover agreement was signed on behalf of the Government by Ahmed Shameem, Director General at the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, and by IASL Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas. The move places the national airline and the airport under a single operator, a shift the company says will allow for a more seamless and passenger‑centred service.

The project will almost double the terminal’s built‑up area from 959 square metres to 1,874 square metres, expanding capacity across arrivals, departures, check‑in and baggage handling. Dharavandhoo currently handles more than eight flights a day, connecting island communities and resort guests travelling across the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The new terminal will feature architecture inspired by local marine life and climate‑responsive design, including shaded outdoor waiting areas. The arrival hall will be enlarged and fitted with a baggage conveyor belt to ease passenger flow, while the check‑in area will be upgraded with self‑service kiosks to reduce queues.

The departure hall will be expanded into a brighter, more open space with modern security screening and three boarding gates, increasing capacity from 80 passengers to more than 175. Behind the scenes, the baggage sort‑out area will also be enlarged to improve operational efficiency.

Facilities for families, including dedicated baby‑care spaces, and open‑air areas designed to bring in natural light and fresh air are part of the plan.

A key feature of the development is a new executive lounge offering more than 75 seats across premium seating zones, curated refreshments and a quieter space for travellers heading to the high‑end resorts of Baa Atoll.

IASL’s position as both airport operator and airline gives it a unique advantage, the company says. Maldivian operates more than four daily flights to Dharavandhoo, giving the airline direct insight into passenger needs and allowing airport operations to be aligned with flight schedules and service standards.

The project is part of a wider national initiative to strengthen regional aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity to key tourism destinations. IASL says the development supports its broader vision to modernise services, improve efficiency and deliver an experience that reflects Maldivian hospitality.

“Dharavandhoo Airport terminal development is a key investment in strengthening aviation and elevates the standard of service for travellers across Baa Atoll,” said Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas. “The expanded terminal and executive lounge will strengthen connectivity while upholding the hospitality, service quality and reliability our passengers expect.”

Opened in 2012, Dharavandhoo Airport has become a vital link for the northern atolls, supporting domestic travel and serving as a gateway to the region’s tourism hotspots, including Hanifaru Bay. Its 1,189‑metre runway supports turboprop operations connecting Baa Atoll with the rest of the country.

With the new development, the airport is expected to meet rising travel demand while offering smoother connections and improved facilities for both residents and visitors.

IASL, established in 2000, operates the national airline Maldivian and manages a wide range of aviation services including lounges, engineering, cargo, seaplane operations and airport management. The company has focused on modernisation and staff development as part of its long‑term strategy to raise service standards and strengthen financial sustainability.

The Dharavandhoo expansion marks one of its most significant regional investments to date, setting the stage for a more integrated and passenger‑focused travel experience in Baa Atoll.

With Dharavandhoo being developed, people in G.Dh are asking when Kaadehdhoo Airport will be renovated. The 30‑year‑old airport is operated by Villa and is in a fully neglected state. Villa has stopped improving the service, leaving this key airport in an important tourism zone in complete disrepair.
