President Dr Mohammed Muizzu said the government has repaid the 500 million dollar sukuk taken during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration without printing money and without reducing any state benefits.

He made the remarks at a PNC rally held to close the campaign, after thousands took part in the People’s Great March at Artificial Beach this evening.

The President said the debt had been taken “without any plan”, yet the 524.68 million dollars paid yesterday was settled through the authority of the Finance Ministry alone. He said the country’s reserves were kept at record levels throughout the process.

Addressing the crowd, the President spoke of the economic fragility he inherited and said he had worked to stabilise the situation without printing “a single rufiya”. He said the government’s approach reflected “the national mindset” and urged voters to support Congress candidates in the upcoming elections.

Thousands attended the rally, where the President highlighted the administration’s efforts to strengthen financial independence and reduce reliance on external borrowing.
