Why Muizzu Deserves a Second Term in 2028: Speaker Abdul Raheem Makes the Case for Fiscal Resilience

MALÉ — In a robust defence of the administration’s economic trajectory, Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has argued that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s stewardship over the past year and a half has earned him a second presidential term in 2028. Speaking at a People’s National Congress (PNC) rally on the island of Ukulhas, the senior ruling-party figure painted a picture of a nation pulled back from the precipice of bankruptcy through steadfast leadership and strict fiscal discipline.

Abdul Raheem alleged that when President Muizzu assumed office, the state coffers had been severely depleted, with political adversaries anticipating a total economic collapse within the administration’s first three months. Instead, he maintained, the government successfully serviced colossal inherited debts while keeping capital development projects active, bypassing the need for foreign commercial loans or money printing.
“As we approach three years, there has been no bankruptcy, salaries are paid regularly, staple foods are consistently available, fuel is supplied without disruption, and all basic services are functioning,” Abdul Raheem told the gathering. “Every development project is moving forward, debts are being paid off, no new loans are being taken, and money is not being printed. Therefore, the salute must go to President Muizzu.”
The Speaker credited the president’s administrative approach with restoring public safety and societal calm, contrasting the current atmosphere with what he described as the aimless drift of previous political dispensations. He suggested that the opposition’s persistent criticisms stem from an inability to reconcile with the administration’s steadying hand on the national helm.
This political framing signals an early consolidation of the ruling coalition’s narrative ahead of the distant 2028 electoral cycle, positioning fiscal survival and uninterrupted public services as the core pillars of the incumbent’s mandate.
