National carrier Maldivian has signed an agreement with Canadian manufacturer De Havilland to acquire two new Twin Otter Classic 300G aircraft, marking the first addition to its seaplane fleet since 2018.

Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas confirmed that Maldivian is the first local airline to order this latest generation model. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Iyas highlighted the growth of Maldivian’s seaplane operations, which began in 2014 with just two aircraft and now operates 11 Twin Otters serving resorts and local islands.

“This aircraft is specifically built for the Maldivian environment, meaning we won’t need to make the modifications required for older models before putting them into service,” Iyas said. “This is also the first time a Maldivian airline has ordered the latest generation Twin Otter Classic 300G.”

Iyas noted that the national carrier was also the first airline in the country to launch scheduled commercial flights using wheel-equipped Twin Otters on February 1.

He added that the deal reflects a long-standing partnership between Island Aviation Services and De Havilland as the airline moves to expand and modernize its fleet.
