The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will submit a resolution to its National Council tonight calling for continuous street protests until President Dr Mohamed Muizzu resigns, party sources confirmed.
The resolution, drafted by MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed, demands that the government stop taking reckless financial measures during the ongoing economic downturn and sit down with the opposition to fix the country’s fiscal crisis. Should President Muizzu refuse to cooperate, the resolution directs the party to launch direct action on the streets until he steps down.
In a message sent to the MDP National Council WhatsApp group, Nasheed urged members to back the resolution ahead of tonight’s meeting.
“The most important step to increase US Dollar inflows into the Maldives is to build business confidence in the government’s fiscal and economic policies,” the resolution states. “It is vital that business owners have full confidence that keeping their money in the Maldives will not cause them losses.”
The resolution further points out that the administration has failed to take effective steps to reduce foreign debt payments, driving up the cost of living and the black-market price of the US Dollar across the country.
