An Indian woman caught trying to smuggle over two kilograms of narcotics into Velana International Airport (VIA) has been remanded in custody for 30 days by the Criminal Court.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Elise Mike Baramhane, arrived at VIA aboard an IndiGo flight. Customs officers flagged her luggage with a red sticker after suspicious items showed up on the X-ray scan. A search of her bags revealed several suspicious bottles packed inside.

Court documents state that initial testing on the contents of the bottles came back positive for Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabinol. The total weight of the seized substances came out to 2,450 grams (2.45 kg).

Police produced her before Judge Sofwath Habeeb at the Criminal Court yesterday morning to decide on her detention. The court ordered her held in custody for 30 days, citing potential threats to public safety if released.

Prosecution evidence submitted to court includes statements from Customs and Police officers, chemical analysis test reports, and chat logs pulled from her mobile phone.

The arrest comes amid a series of recent drug busts involving foreign nationals at VIA, with Customs and Police continuing to crack down on narcotics smuggled through air channels. Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
