Male’ — More than 8,000 students across the Maldives embarked on a critical academic milestone this week as the O Level examinations commenced, marking the start of a rigorous testing period that will extend through June alongside the A Level examinations. The annual assessments, pivotal for secondary school students, have drawn significant attention this year due to a notable increase in participation.

According to education officials, 8,364 students are registered for the O Level exams, while 7,666 are sitting for the Cambridge examinations and 7,519 for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams. This year’s O Level cohort represents a substantial rise compared to the previous year, underscoring growing academic engagement in the island nation.

President Mohammed Muizzu addressed the students in a public statement, extending his best wishes for their success. “We want students to answer questions sharply and easily, achieving the good results that parents and schools expect,” he said. Mr. Muizzu expressed hope that every student would excel, becoming “a serviceable child that Maldives would be proud of,”.

The examinations, administered under strict protocols, are a cornerstone of the Maldivian education system, determining students’ eligibility for further studies and shaping their academic and professional futures. Schools and families across the archipelago have been preparing for months, with students attending extra classes and revision sessions to tackle the demanding syllabi.

Education authorities have reported that examination centers are fully equipped, with measures in place to ensure a smooth process as it was done in previous years. The increased turnout this year reflects both population growth and a concerted push by the government to bolster educational attainment.
