Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has mounted a sharp attack against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, declaring that Muizzu had no meaningful contribution to the flagship Sinamalé Bridge project beyond holding the post of Housing Minister at the time.
Speaking at a rally organized by his party, the People’s National Front (PNF), Yameen dismissed recurring narratives framing Muizzu as the primary architect or engineer behind the landmark sea crossing.
“There is no truth to claims about two bridge engineers,” Yameen said. “During the construction of the Sinamalé Bridge, other than being the Housing Minister, Dr Muizzu had zero contribution or share in that work.”
Yameen insisted that all strategic discussions, negotiations, and technical reviews were conducted directly at the President’s Office alongside senior committee heads. He accused the current administration of distorting facts to misguide the public regarding the true legacy of major infrastructure projects.
Yameen also took aim at President Muizzu’s high-profile walking inspection across the newly linked superstructure of the Thilamalé Bridge connecting Malé and Vilimalé alongside Cabinet Ministers and heads of state enterprise.
“You can dress up nice and walk back and forth. Because right now, there isn’t anything else to do anyway,” Yameen remarked.
Shifting to the healthcare sector, Yameen highlighted that medical degree programs to train local doctors were launched during his administration, noting that several batches have now graduated.
However, he cautioned that the national health system is collapsing under current management, pointing out that several major hospitals have begun turning away patients using the state health insurance scheme, Aasandha. Yameen stated he remains waiting for a day when healthcare services in the country are restored to proper working order.
