The President’s Office has formally launched the nomination process for the position of an Election Commission member. Today’s announcement discloses that applications for the appointment of a member to the Election Commission will be accepted from today until the 30th of this month.
In adherence to the Constitution, individuals chosen for roles within the Election Commission must possess the education and capability necessary to fulfill the Commission’s duties. It is noteworthy that individuals affiliated with a political party are considered ineligible for this position. The selection of commission members will be grounded in nominations submitted by the President, with the final appointment being confirmed by the Majlis for a term of five years. Ismail Habib, currently serving in his second term, is anticipated to conclude his term in March.
Established as an independent government body in 2008, the Elections Commission plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all elections in the Maldives adhere to democratic principles, promoting maximum public participation in an independent, just, and transparent electoral process. Initially formed for an interim period from September 6, 2008, to November 23, 2009, the first permanent Elections Commission of the Maldives was established on November 24, 2009.
The Elections Commission, consisting of five members, is presently led by Chairman Fuwad Thowfeek and Vice Chairman Ismail Habeeb Abdul Raheem. The commission’s composition is completed by three commissioners: Ali Nashaath, Dr. Mohamed Zahir, and Mohamed Asif. The collective efforts of the commission underscore its commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process within the Maldives.
