The swearing-in ceremony for the members of Majlis elected in the 20th Parliamentary elections, held on Sunday, is slated to take place on the 28th of next month, according to official sources.

In a significant political development, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has clinched a commanding supermajority in the Maldives Parliament, securing over 60 seats in the latest parliamentary elections.

With an impressive voter turnout of over 200,000 Maldivians, Sunday’s elections witnessed a fierce contest among 326 candidates vying for 93 parliamentary seats, including six newly added seats. Among them, candidates from the ruling party were in the fray for 90 seats.

The Results reveal a resounding victory for the PNC, as it swept to power with 66 seats, surpassing the crucial two-thirds mark in the Majlis. However, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) faced a staggering setback, managing to secure only 12 out of the 89 seats it contested.

Adding to the ruling coalition’s triumph, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), in alliance with PNC, clinched two seats, while the Maldives National Party (MNP), another ally, secured one. Additionally, the Jumhoory Party (JP) won one seat, with 11 independent candidates also emerging victorious.

It is believed that some independents will be joining the ruling PNC as well. So far, only the independent candidate from Lh. Naifaru constituency has signed up for PNC.

Notably, the Democrats and Adhaalath Party (AP) failed to secure any seats in this electoral battle.

Among the notable outcomes of the elections, three incumbent PNC members successfully retained their seats, demonstrating the party’s stronghold in certain constituencies. Similarly, four incumbents from MDP secured their positions, signaling continued support for the opposition party. Additionally, three other incumbents from various parties managed to secure their seats, reflecting a mix of continuity and change in Majlis representation.

The outcome of the Majlis elections underscores a significant shift in Maldives’ political landscape, signaling a renewed mandate for the PNC and its allies to steer the nation’s course in the coming years.
